About us

The Junior Church caters for children & young people from the age of 2½ to 18 years.

We meet every Sunday morning from 10.30 to 11.30. The group is split into three sections, children aged 2½ to 6 years, 7 to 11 years & young people aged 11 + years.

The Junior Church is staffed by teachers with several years of experience teaching children and young people and the group uses the Roots teaching material, which follows the lectionary, used in the main service.

Members of the Junior Church regularly take part in worship in the form of singing, reading, drama & craft activities, the Senior section occasionally prepare and deliver the complete service.

There is also a thriving music group, which provides the music for the monthly All age worship services. We are also present in church for baptisms and family communion services.

Junior Church is also involved in the decoration of the church for special services, like Harvest, Christmas and Mothering Sunday. Decorations for Mothering Sunday and Christmas involve the children in the very popular flower workshops.

There is also a thriving Youth fellowship group for those young people in year 8 and over, they meet on the 2 nd and 4th Sundays of each month from 6 to 8pm

Over the summer we have done lots of activities including a treasure hunt on Dovecote Lane Park, a really fun music session, a fundraising cookery session and of course box modelling which everybody really enjoys.

One of our Young People also went to India for two weeks during the summer. Rachael Brough joined other young people in the area and went to Andra Pradesh with Nottingham Youth for Christ to work with the charity Harvest India. Here is the report she wrote for the newsletter:

At 6am we started off from London to India, stopping off in Frankfurt, a mere eight hour plane journey! Luckily Curly and I had a nap so missed a lot of it. When we touched down in Chennai airport, India, we were met by two of Harvest India’s staff who got us safely to the hotel. Which is definitely an achievement considering the chaos on the roads; I was glad I wasn’t learning to drive in India! By now it was 3am and definitely time to get some shut eye…

The next day we got up bright and early for devotions, it little too early it turns out as we’d set our watches an hour fast, oops! After devotions we set out to get the train to our final destination. Six hours later we got off the train to a great welcome, about twenty people hugging us and giving us flower garlands, you wouldn’t get that at home! At Sudheer’s house (head of Harvest India) we quickly made ourselves at home and got ready for an early morning start.

We also went to an orphanage where some sang some action songs; one of the children did an Indian rap for us! I have to say he was definitely better at dancing than we were!

DSC_0249The next day we went to a village called Chiluvuru where there was a water well which we had raised the money for during the sponsored walk. We dedicated the well and prayed over it, then we all got a turn at pumping the water out!

PICT0653The next few days were a whirlwind of activity. On one day we went to buy sari’s, Sudheer’s wife Santosh went with us as living in a house full of men she doesn’t often get to go shopping. Of course she then had to help us put them on as we were making a fine mess of it! When Santosh had sorted us all out we went to a village for a special meeting where we told some stories about Jesus, some of the people had never heard of Jesus before.

As Saturday begun we headed off to a on the bus to a medicine ministry. This is where people can go to the doctors to get their medicine for free. There were lots of children there who were all very keen to take their medicine even though it probably didn’t taste very nice! After that we headed off to a leprosy colony (leprosy is a type of skin disease). Here we served the people there food and prayed with them, they were all really friendly. We also had a look at the new houses that were being built for them.

On Sunday we went to the local church, everybody was singing and dancing, it was a lot of fun. After church some of the congregation stays to have a meal. Then we went to the orphanage that was next door. The children were very excited to see us and sang us some songs they had learnt, they were very good. Then it was our turn, we told the story of the Good Samaritan using animal puppets which was very good fun. Over the next few days we dedicated lots of water wells in different villages and visited lots more places including another orphanage and a special meeting for young people.

The flower workshop on Saturday 10th December was attended by 18 members.

We produced a range of flower arrangements to decorate the church for the Christmas period.
