Led by the magical voice of Pippa Marland and distinctive acoustic guitar of Rob King, Carmina brings a breathtaking evening of soulful Celtic music. Tickets £8, (£6 in advance), Student/Child £3 (Village Ventures) www.carmina.co.uk

This Autumn sees award-winning Celtic Soul outfit Carmina taking to the rural road with a tour of Village Halls, schools and other community venues across the Midlands, organized under the auspices of Rural Touring, Village Ventures,.Shindig and Centre Stage. Led by the magical voice and saxophone of Pippa Marland and distinctive acoustic guitar and bodhran of Rob King, Carmina bring you a breathtaking evening of soulful Celtic music. These award-winning songwriters are joined by three luminaries of the international jazz and world music scenes – Chris Haigh (Zumzeaux, Kremlinaires) Geoff Castle (Nucleus, Brendan Power) and Ian Beestin (Organik Trio, Dan Collective).

All the musicians are multi-instrumentalists and the show features voices, fiddle, piano, synth, whistles, bodhran, guitar, mandolin, mandola, percussion and saxes. From roots deep in Celtic traditional music and jazz improvisation the band move effortlessly through haunting Celtic ballads, flying Irish traditional tunes, jazz standards and even Latin rhythms, all blended together in Carmina's unmistakeable style.

The set features audience favourites such as the band's versions of Sinead O'Connor's 'I am Stretched on Your Grave', Joni Mitchell's 'Big Yellow Taxi', Van Morrison's 'Crazy Love'; songs from the English and Irish Folk traditions such as a spine-tingling rendition of the English ballad 'Lord Franklin', and powerful original numbers such as 'Blessed Are the Broken' (Tipperary International Song of Peace 2007), 'Carolan', 'The Leaving Wakes', 'Concorde' (played at Heathrow airport as the Concordes landed after their final commercial flights) and 'Mireia'.

Add to this the band's warm rapport with each audience, their dazzling musicianship and the spontaneity of their approach to the songs and it is guaranteed that no two performances will be quite the same.

Carmina's profile has been rising rapidly in recent months with the release of their Donal Lunny-produced album 'My Crescent City' to rave reviews internationally and their appearances at festivals all over Europe:

"a gorgeously rich depth of colour" 8/10 Hot Press; "a heady creative mix" Metro; **** Top 5 Folk albums of 2007, Nottingham Evening Post; "A joy to visit and revisit" Irish Times; 9+/10 "A musical feast" Folkforum; "beautiful" Aled Jones; "gorgeous – a masterpiece" Frank Hennessey; Best of the Year: top 10 tracks of 2007 The Crooked Road

"Carmina took the Cork Jazz Festival by storm with a superb mix of

journey full of melodic grace and inventiveness - a brilliant band superbly
fronted by vocalist Pippa Marland and guitarist Rob King"

"Their very name is a guarantee of the finest music from an eclectic group of musicians. ****" David Sutherland, Nottingham Evening Post Folk Reviews
